Crusade In Spain - General O'Duffy 1st England Ed. Robert Hale.

Crusade In Spain - General Eoin O'Duffy 1st England Ed. Robert Hale in association with Browne & Nolan, 1938, VERY Scarce copy of the Irish Blueshirt Leader's work on the Spanish Civil War.    The dust wrapper has some  edge tears, loss rear top front corner, but retains the  price on the inner front fold.  Foxing to prelims.  O'Duffy the self proclaimed 'third most important man in Europe' after Hitler and Mussolini was the Chief of Staff of the IRA the second Commissioner of the Garda leader of the Army Comrades Association and then the first leader of Fine Gael. During the Spanish Civil War he led the Irish Brigade on the side of Franco and the Fascists. His book chronicles his experiences in Spain at the head of 700 Irishmen but their role in the war is regarded as having had little effect overall. Of particular interest is how Britain cunningly supported the Communists until they were sufficiently strengthened in order to defeat Franco, and then sought to create a "non-intervention"  pact !   He returned to Ireland at the end of the war and tried to raise a body of men to fight with the Nazis on the Russian front but his offer was not taken seriously by the Germans. He died in 1944 at the early age of 52 and was given a State Funeral in Ireland.
