'Richelieu: or the conspiracy' - 'A play in five acts, to which are added historical odes on the last days of Elizabeth, Cromwell's dream, the death of Nelson.  By the author of 'The Lady of Lyons' Pelham' and the 'Disowned'  Published in New York: Harper & Brothers, 82 Cliff Street, 1839. Given this is dated 1839, presume this is the first US edition.   The author is not mentioned in the title page but is Edward Bulwer Lytton. The book portrays the life of the 17th century French statesman Cardinal Richelieu. The play is famous for the first appearance of the well known phrase 'The pen is mightier than the sword' spoken by the Cardinal in Act II, Scene II.  Condition: Paper covered boards with leather spine. Paper title pasted to spine. Considerable rubbing and wear to board edges. Boards tanned with age with some foxing. Pages tanned with age. Pen inscription in pen - smudged). A few small holes to the bottom right hand margin to a number of pages.
